Queen’s Speech – HMRC specialist expresses concerns

Thursday, June 5, 2014

Peter Hastings has expressed concerns on the latest powers given to HMRC.

HMRC can, for example, liquidate a company even if its claim has not been properly tested through the courts, seize assets of directors without proving its claim, detain and seize goods without lawful justification. Now HMRC has the power to force people who are alleged to be involved in tax avoidance schemes to make accelerated payments and pay the alleged tax up front whilst the Tax Tribunals deal with an appeal, which can take longer than a year to be heard. Peter is confident that this can be challenged.

Peter and the litigation team are currently dealing with a variety of disputes with HMRC. For further information please contact Peter Hastings on 01603 675639 or email peter.hastings@rogers-norton.co.uk.
