Peter specialises in commercial litigation, particularly contract disputes, directors' and shareholders' claims. He also specialises in construction litigation (including arbitration and adjudication), insolvency claims (corporate, personal and fraud) He is a leading specialist in disputes and litigation with HMRC and Border Force, and deals with appeals to the First Tier Tax Tribunal relating to assessments, VAT issues, restoration and WOWGR issues (and Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme), detentions and seizure of goods including condemnation proceedings, appeals to the Court of Appeal and Crown Court, Judicial Review and Injunctions. Peter’s regulatory practice also includes also successfully pursuing and defending claims through the Financial Ombudsman Service, and he advises on Financial Conduct Authority matters in relation to finance. He has acted for a national finance company on consumer credit matters for over 20 years.
Reported cases included Banham Marshall v Lincolnshire County Council 2007 EWHC 402 QBD and Re Checkprice 2010 All ER (D) 296 and CC&C v HMRC 2014/3351.
E v S (ICC 2013) Instructed for Claimant in ICC arbitration concerning an operating agreement for a Guinea Gold Mine, in which both parties alleged that the other was in repudiatory breach, resulting in a temporary shut-down of the mine and substantial claims for damages. Arbitration settled on favourable terms shortly before substantive hearing. Arbitral Tribunal: John Marrin QC, Joe Smouha QC, Sir Gordon Langley.
Peter is also experienced and has recently dealt with High Court injunctions acting for both Employer and Employee in High Court Claims seeking to enforce and defence breaches of restrictive covenants in contracts of employment and breach of confidential information claims.
Peter acts for small and medium-sized businesses across East Anglia, national and international clients, PLCs, insolvency practitioners, directors, shareholders and partners. He also acts for clients in retail and manufacturing, construction, healthcare (especially GP partnerships), alcohol and warehousing/transport, sport and leisure, and agriculture. Peter has dealt with several multi-million pound claims. Peter successfully arbitrated a £1 million claim within three weeks.
Career to date
Educated at Woodbridge School, Peter completed his law exams at De Montfort University, Leicester. Having qualified as a Legal Executive in 1993, Peter qualified as a solicitor in 2001.
