Christmas Contact Arrangements for Separated Parents
“The most wonderful time of the year” is fast approaching and will soon be upon us. If you haven’t already, now is the time to consider and discuss your child’s arrangements for contact over the Christmas period.
Christmas can sadly become one of the most contentious times of year for separated parents. It is important that parents remember to remain child-focussed and keep them away from any adult issues or arguments. Christmas should be an exciting and joyful time for children to be able to spend time with all of their family.
Separated parents should be able to communicate and co-parent their children with a positive and promotive approach. If you do find it difficult to communicate with your ex-partner, consider a family member or close friend who may be able to assist.
If there is an existing Child Arrangements Order for the child, arrangements for Christmas and birthdays etc. will usually be dealt with therein. Sometimes, the holiday period is alternated between Christmas Day and Boxing Day, some parents choose to split the Christmas holidays in half, these arrangements are not “one size fits all”, different approaches work for different families.
The guidance is abundantly clear that contact with the non-resident parent should not be restricted unless there are significant concerns around the children’s wellbeing and safety whilst in their care.
