BREXIT: Importing goods into the UK

Brexit has caused many issues for those wishing to import and export goods into and out of the UK. Our team’s extensive experience of dealing with HMRC and UK Border Force means we are well placed to help you either prepare for a transaction or be on hand to help should something go wrong.

Since the 1st January 2021, the rules on importing goods to the UK have changed. There are numerous new processes that must be completed including the requirement of an EORI number starting with the letters GB which you are able to apply online for.

The business sending the goods must be able to export to the UK, they may well need to complete an export declaration in their own country and obtain the correct licences or certificates to be able to do this. The business importing the goods from abroad will also need to make a customs declaration – a full version of which must be made at the time the goods cross the UK boarder. We can advise on Anti Dumping Duty, Duty, Codes and Tariffs.

Once this has been obtained, customs will send a response detailing the amount you owe in terms of duties and VAT which must be settled before your goods can be released.  If your goods require a special licence, e.g. are a medical or cosmetic product, you will also need to be sure that all labelling and safety regulations are followed, more details of which can be found here.

These changes can be complex and as with all legal matters, it is best practice to seek advice at the earliest opportunity to avoid any delays or unnecessary charges. Contact our team to talk about your requirements and how we can help.
