Dementia in the News

Her husband Scott Mitchell, 55, said his 80-year-old wife had been given the news in April 2014.

The EastEnders star had been taking medication to manage her condition but the symptoms have worsened in recent weeks.

In a newspaper interview Mr Mitchell said: “Since her 80th birthday last August, a definite continual confusion has set in, so it’s becoming a lot more difficult for us to hide”.

“I hope speaking out will help other families dealing with loved ones who have this cruel disease. Secondly, I want the public to know because they are naturally very drawn to Barbara and she loves talking to them,” he added.

As the population demographic continues to rise, so the number of people and their families who have to deal with the different types of Dementia grows.

The condition is difficult to understand, causing many challenges to those involved and does not respect who you are.

We are running a Dementia workshop at the Assembly House on 24th May – if you interested in getting a better understanding of Dementia and how it affects people lives then please follow this link.
