Exploring Law in Practice: Ruby’s Work Experience Placement at Rogers & Norton

At Rogers & Norton we’re passionate about supporting young people as they explore future career opportunities. Whether students are considering a career in law or simply want to experience life in a professional environment, we are committed to providing meaningful work experience placements that offer insight, learning and real-world exposure.

This summer we welcomed Ruby, an Economics & Finance undergraduate from the University of East Anglia, for a week of work experience across several of our Norwich-based departments. Her time with us gave her a first-hand look at the day-to-day workings of a busy law firm as well as the chance to discover which areas of law most interested her.

‘‘I have just finished my second year at UEA. I have always been interested in problem solving, research and variety in my work, and law brings these elements together. Spending a week at Rogers & Norton has been invaluable in helping me understand more about the profession and discover what it is about law that I enjoy.’’

Throughout the week Ruby shadowed multiple teams, giving her a broad range of experience.

Corporate and Commercial

Ruby began her week with the Corporate & Commercial team where she reviewed contracts, transactional agreements and due diligence documents.

‘‘I really enjoyed working with this team. It gave me the chance to research companies and learn new concepts like severance, indemnity and warranties. I was able to use my financial background to spot small but significant details and it was great to discuss these with the team and see how our knowledge complemented each other.’’

Private Client and Litigation

Time with the Private Client team gave Ruby an insight into the process of drafting Wills and Powers of Attorney while also introducing her to some complex legal issues.

‘‘I was fascinated by a case study surrounding predatory marriages and how a Will can become invalid once someone marries. It showed me how in certain situations the law can unintentionally have a huge impact on individuals and families.

In the afternoon she joined the Litigation team to review a commercial tenant and landlord dispute.

I analysed the case, looked at the contractual obligations and even researched new legal terms like quiet enjoyment and defence of estoppel. It was really rewarding to be trusted with that level of involvement.’’

Personal Injury and Commercial Property

Ruby described her time with the Personal Injury team as one of her highlights.

‘‘I loved the investigative nature of the work and got to sit in on a client meeting which was fascinating. Seeing a case develop in real time and understanding the level of detail required was invaluable.’’

Later, with the Commercial Property team, Ruby completed Law Academy tasks to better understand the sector and spent time researching lease agreements and property-related documents.

Conveyancing and Family Law

Ruby also spent time with the Conveyancing team, experiencing their fast-paced environment and learning about the legal process behind buying a home, something she found really relevant as a young adult.

To round off the week Ruby joined the Family Law team and attended a live court hearing.

‘‘Being in court was such an eye-opening experience. Witnessing a case unfold first-hand was incredible and it has really fuelled my excitement to continue researching the law profession’’

Reflecting on her week as a whole, Ruby said ‘‘My time at Rogers & Norton has been both varied and rewarding. Experiencing so many different areas of law has strengthened my interest in the profession and helped me identify where my passions lie. I am incredibly grateful to everyone at Rogers & Norton for sharing their time and knowledge with me.’’

At Rogers & Norton we are proud to play a role in supporting young people as they explore their future careers. Ruby’s enthusiasm and curiosity made her a pleasure to work with and we look forward to welcoming more students seeking valuable work experience in the months ahead.
