Brain Tumour Awareness Month: What You Need to Know
When first faced with a brain tumour diagnosis, the last thing on your mind is paperwork and legal planning. However, taking care of these essential matters early can provide invaluable peace of mind for both you and your loved ones.
As we mark Brain Tumour Awareness Month this March, let’s talk about something that’s not openly discussed but incredibly important: the legal and financial steps that can protect you and your family during this challenging journey.
Why Legal Planning Matters
A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so due to mental or physical incapacity. It provides control over your future by ensuring your wishes are respected, protection for your interests by reducing the risk of family disputes or legal challenges, and peace of mind knowing your affairs are in order.
Health and Welfare LPA
This document allows your attorney to make decisions about your health and care, including the type of treatment you receive, where you live and whether life-sustaining treatment should be provided. Unlike a Property and Financial Affairs LPA, this can only be used if you lose mental capacity in the future, ensuring that your wishes are respected when you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself.
Property and Financial Affairs LPA
This allows your appointed attorney to assist with financial decisions, such as managing banking, buying or selling property and overseeing investments. The key benefit of this type of LPA is that it can be used while you still have mental capacity. Once registered, your attorney can step in to help with financial matters as needed.
From Monday 3rd February to Friday 25th April 2025, we are offering a 20% discount on our LPA fees and additionally donating £50 from every LPA appointment to the Priscilla Bacon Hospice Charity, one of our chosen charities. It is our way of giving back whilst helping you plan for the future.
The Importance of Having a Will
We know it is not the easiest topic to think about, but having an up-to-date will is incredibly important. It’s not just about who gets what – it’s about making things easier for your loved ones and ensuring your wishes are honoured. If you have been diagnosed with a brain tumour, your solicitor might want to talk you through adding trusts to your will, which allows greater flexibility for your family, and make provisions for vulnerable loved ones. Rogers & Norton offer an online Will questionnaire to understand more about your situation and provide us with the basic information needed to prepare your Will, if you do opt for this service, please know your details are treated with the strictest of confidence.
