Update Your Will Week – 3rd March to 9th March 2025
Research carried out by The Association of Lifetime Lawyers indicates that 1 in 10 adults in the UK have started making a Will but fail to complete it.
The aim of Update Your Will Week is to focus the attention to either preparing or completing your Will. Most clients at Rogers & Norton find a sense of comfort and relief once this task has been removed from their to-do list. Contrary to misinformation, if you are an adult in the UK, you probably require a Will, but it is more essential if you have children or own a house.
If you die without having made a valid Will, any assets owned by you are distributed in accordance with the strict laws under the Rules of Intestacy. The Rules of Intestacy define who should benefit from your estate and specify procedures for the administration of your estate including who can act as the personal representative to handle the assets, debts and distribution in accordance with the law. It often means that people you might wish to benefit do not, such as cohabiting partners or unmarried couples. It could also mean people benefitting from your estate who you might otherwise not have chosen to benefit.
It is recommended that a Will is reviewed every five years to ensure that it is still suitable for your individual needs and that it considers any major changes that have occurred within your family. For example, because of marriage or civil partnership, divorce or separation, new births or a death in the family.
Some Wills are written by unregulated Will writers, which can lead to complications after death that can often be costly to rectify as well as adding to the stress of a family already dealing with bereavement.
